GTA 2 Gets Modern Lighting Overhaul with New Mod
A 27-year-old Grand Theft Auto 2 (GTA 2) mod has added full path-traced lighting to the classic top-down game. Gebdag, a developer who created the GTA2 RTX Remix mod, used Nvidia's RTX Remix technology to replace the original lighting with path-traced illumination. This technique simulates how light travels and bounces through a scene.
The mod adds dynamic light from fires, explosions, and gunfire, as well as emissive textures that let objects glow. It also includes a day-night cycle through Remix Plus, a community-built version of the RTX Remix runtime, and allows players to adjust the lighting and time of day in-game.
GTA 2 originally ran at a 4:3 aspect ratio, but the mod fixes this by allowing the game to run at 16:9 widescreen. It can also reach 60fps with frame generation enabled.
