Guardians of the Galaxy Ride Emerges From Twilight Zone Tower Makeover

The Disney California Adventure theme park's Twilight Zone Tower of Terror was due for a makeover. What emerged was Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission Breakout!, a ride that fans initially met with skepticism. The transformation took place in just a few months, ahead of the 2017 summer tourist season.

Famed retired Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde led the project and explained the thought process behind it. He noted that fans viewed the change as a marketing move, done solely because a new Marvel movie was being released. However, Rohde revealed that the motivating factor was to give the Disneyland Resort something new to promote for 2017 and to introduce Marvel into the parks.

Rohde initially pitched a Dr. Strange-inspired attraction but was rejected by executives who deemed Dr. Strange not popular enough. They then asked him to focus on Spider-Man, which Rohde refused, stating that there's nowhere for Spider-Man to be in a drop tower ride. The team ultimately decided to compromise with Guardians of the Galaxy.

The makeover had to be completed quickly and within a fixed budget. A concession was made by limiting reviews and having a strict deadline. The result was a retro sci-fi building that resembles a grain silo, fortress, or prison, drawing inspiration from Marvel comic artist Jack Kirby and architect Renzo Piano.
