H-1B Visa Holder Misses Family Milestones After 11 Years in US
Abhradeep Chatterjee, an Indian professional living in the US on an H-1B visa, has faced significant emotional challenges due to his prolonged separation from his family in India. Since moving to the US in 2015, Chatterjee, now 37, has found that the hardest part of his journey has been the distance from his loved ones, especially as his parents grow older.
Chatterjee, who works as an associate director at NTT Data in Minnesota, has not returned to India since his move. This has led him to miss several important family milestones, including an uncle’s funeral and a cousin’s wedding. He expressed a deep longing to be able to travel home more easily, highlighting the emotional toll of being far from family.
The emotional cost of living abroad has become increasingly apparent over the past 11 years. Chatterjee’s story underscores the personal sacrifices often made by professionals on H-1B visas, who may prioritize career opportunities in the US but at the expense of being present for their families.
