Halo Developers Canceled Three Games Amid Mass Layoffs
Microsoft's Halo game development team, 343 Industries, was hit by massive layoffs that changed the course of three games in development. According to insider RebsGaming and The Verge, three projects were being worked on simultaneously: a new game based on the novel First Strike, updated versions of classic installments, and the most advanced project, Halo 7.
The game set in the First Strike universe was supposed to bridge the gap between remakes of Halo 2 and Halo 3. It would have featured five story missions and a 'Firefight' mode, potentially released next year. Meanwhile, a small team was working on Halo 7, with a new storyline, PvP, cooperative PvE, and an expanded 'Forge' editor.
However, the layoff significantly impacted the studio's ability to develop games, leaving only about 30 people behind after key engineers, artists, and support staff were let go. The team transitioned from game development to a support role, with Halo Studios now focused on supporting existing projects rather than developing new ones.
