Hancock Iron Ore Extends Rail Lifespan with AI-Driven Operating Model
Hancock Iron Ore has implemented an AI-assisted operating model to improve reliability across its mining operations. The goal was to reduce rail disruptions, inspection volume, and delayed defect insights that could affect output, cost, safety, and maintenance planning.
The company built a repeatable AI-assisted model using Azure AI, Microsoft Foundry, Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databricks, and Microsoft 365 Copilot. This has led to significant benefits, including the use of an enterprise assistant called RoyBot that handles over 70,000 messages a month for 2,000-plus users.
The company's efforts have also resulted in cost savings, with TrackDefectX saving $475,000 a year in rail grinding costs. Additionally, the model has extended the lifespan of rails by more than 10%.
