Healthcare's AI Arms Race: Transparency Elusive as Denial Risks Rise
The healthcare industry is increasingly relying on artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline administrative tasks such as prior authorizations and claims processing. However, a closer look reveals that AI's role in care denials is more complex than initially stated by payers like UnitedHealth Group and Cigna.
'What I'm saying is that technology determines which cases enter the denial risk pathway,' said Stacie Sutter, vice president of payer strategy at Ensemble Health Partners. This means AI tools are routing certain claims to be reviewed by clinicians while others may be automatically approved or denied based on pre-set criteria.
The situation creates a dilemma for healthcare providers who must navigate the opaque decision-making process without knowing what factors contribute to an AI-driven denial. Sutter compared it to 'chasing ghosts,' where providers constantly try to reverse-engineer AI-enabled decisions. To make matters worse, the criteria used by AI can change frequently, further complicating the process.
