Antonia Speariett, a dog owner from Coppull in Lancashire, has shared the tragic story of how a £12 rope toy from Amazon led to the death of her five-year-old cane corso, Cane. The toy caused an intestinal blockage after Cane ingested part of it during a game of tug-of-war. Despite emergency surgery, the blockage was fatal, as the rope had severed the blood supply to Cane's intestines.
Antonia described the heartbreak of losing her beloved pet, whom she had raised since he was a puppy. 'Cane was always there, like he was my protector,' she said. The rapid decline in Cane's health, from refusing dinner to needing emergency surgery within two days, highlighted the severe danger posed by such toys. Antonia urged other dog owners to discard rope toys immediately, emphasizing that 'it is not worth it.'
Since sharing her story, Antonia has learned that many other dog owners have experienced similar tragedies. She has launched a petition calling for stricter legislation on dog toy safety to prevent further incidents. 'These toys are clearly dangerous,' she stated, noting that the issue spans multiple brands and sellers.
An Amazon spokesperson expressed sorrow over the incident and confirmed they were in touch with Antonia. The case underscores the potential risks of seemingly harmless pet products and the need for greater awareness among pet owners.
