Hidden Menu Reveals Android Updates Are Not Always Automatic

For those who have been following my writing on Android devices since 2011, it may come as no surprise that I'm meticulous about keeping my phones up to date. Whether it's checking for software updates or installing Google Play system updates, I've always made sure my devices are running the latest available versions.

However, a recent discovery has changed the way I approach Android updates. While digging through the settings on my Pixel phone, I stumbled upon a hidden menu that allows me to manually trigger system updates. This feature, which is not well-known even among seasoned Android users, gives me greater control over the updates my device receives.

The System services page, as it's called, provides a list of core Android components that are waiting for updates. These include Android System WebView, Google Play Services, and Private Compute Services, among others. What struck me was that these updates were not reflected in the usual places I check, such as the Google Play Store or the system settings.

Since discovering this feature, I've made it a habit to regularly check the System services page for pending updates. This has allowed me to stay on top of my device's updates and ensure that I'm always running the latest available versions. The process is surprisingly straightforward: simply navigate to Settings > All services > Privacy & security > System services, and you'll find the list of waiting updates.
