Home Depot Beats Earnings Expectations, Posts Four-Year High in Comps
Home Depot's second-quarter earnings report showed the company beat expectations on both revenue and adjusted earnings per share, posting a four-year high in comparable sales.
The company reported $47.9 billion in sales, a 5.7% increase from last year, with comparable sales climbing 1.7%. Adjusted earnings reached $4.92 against $4.68 a year ago, exceeding the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $4.71 in EPS on $47.5 billion in revenue.
CFO Richard McPhail explained that results exceeded expectations due to 'broad based demand across the business as customers continued to engage in smaller projects', marking an acceleration from last year's second quarter when comparable sales were 1.0%.
However, a closer look at the numbers reveals that traffic has been declining for several quarters, with total customer transactions falling 1%, while comparable average ticket rose 2.8%. This indicates that Home Depot's growth came primarily from customers spending more per visit rather than an increase in foot traffic.
