Home Depot Co-Founder Bernie Marcus's Secret Dream: From Firing to Philanthropy
Bernie Marcus's life was marked by an unexpected career trajectory that led him from being fired in 1978 to building one of America's most recognizable companies, Home Depot. Before becoming a billionaire entrepreneur, Marcus had a different dream: he wanted to become a doctor. However, his family couldn't afford medical school, so he enrolled in pharmacy school instead.
Marcus graduated from Rutgers University and eventually moved into the business world, taking on leadership roles at manufacturing companies before finding his way into the home improvement industry. The biggest career turning point arrived when he was fired from Handy Dan, a home improvement retailer that no longer exists. Instead of being defined by this setback, Marcus used it as an opportunity to start again and eventually co-founded Home Depot.
The company went on to become a massive home improvement retailer, while Marcus accumulated a fortune estimated at around $11 billion by the time of his death. However, alongside his business success, Marcus never completely abandoned his interest in medicine. That interest eventually became one of the defining features of his philanthropy through The Marcus Foundation.
