Home Depot Honored for Its Role in Shaping Georgia's Business History
The Home Depot has been recognized for its significant contributions to Georgia's business history. A new historical marker was dedicated at The Home Depot Store Support Center in Atlanta, acknowledging the company's growth and impact on the home improvement industry.
The Georgia Historical Society established the marker as part of its Georgia Business History Initiative, which honors companies that have shaped the state's economic, cultural, and social development. Founded by Bernie Marcus and Arthur M. Blank in 1978, The Home Depot opened its first two stores in Atlanta on June 22, 1979.
The company went public in 1981 and achieved a milestone when it opened its 100th store in 1989. It expanded internationally with its first store in Canada in 1994 and later entered Mexico in 2001. The Georgia Historical Society credits The Home Depot for transforming the home improvement industry by offering a wide selection of merchandise, competitive prices, and exceptional customer service.
