Home Depot Tackles Labor Gap with Free Skilled Trades Program
The labor gap in skilled trades is growing as older generations approach retirement age. To combat this issue, The Home Depot has launched a program called Path to Pro Skills Explorers, which provides free and accessible ways for students to explore careers in plumbing, construction, electrical fields, and more.
Michael Rowe, executive vice president of Pro for The Home Depot, noted that closing the skilled labor gap starts much earlier, emphasizing the need for young people to see what's possible in these lucrative careers. As part of a commitment by The Home Depot and The Home Depot Foundation to deliver 15 million introductions to the skilled trades by 2032, the program offers an accessible, no-cost curriculum for youth education groups to learn about the skilled trades.
Parents and educators can encourage young people to consider careers in skilled trades by starting career conversations early. This can be done by normalizing these conversations, keeping them casual, and sparking curiosity about activities kids enjoy and connecting those interests to potential career paths.
