Home Depot Volunteers Give Disabled Veteran Five-Day Home Makeover
A group of volunteers from Home Depot locations in Metro Detroit are giving Clinton Township resident Richard Lumetta, a disabled Navy veteran, a five-day home makeover. The project is funded by The Home Depot Foundation grant and aims to make Lumetta's home more accessible and safe for him to live independently.
The renovation involves removing everyday barriers inside the house, including moving the washing machine to a spare bedroom so Lumetta won't need to use the stairs for laundry, replacing carpet with laminate flooring, and rehanging doors. Crews are also adding railings at the side and front entrances, repainting the house, and reworking the landscaping.
Lumetta met Tammy T. Patton, founder of Team Patton Outreach, through physical therapy, and she helped organize the renovation project. Patton said that the changes will help Lumetta continue living at home rather than move to a nursing facility.
