Home Depot's Hardware Shortcomings Leave DIYers Scrambling

Home Depot's large inventories and focus on DIY home improvement market may not be the best choice for customers looking for specific hardware items. Since Home Depot became the world's largest home improvement store in 1990, almost 5,000 smaller hardware stores have disappeared from the retail landscape.

The company has evolved to 128,000-square-foot behemoths with 35,000 different products, but its inventory focus has shifted away from traditional hardware items. This is in contrast to Ace Hardware, which has consistently outperformed Home Depot in customer satisfaction surveys by carrying a broader selection of products and having more knowledgeable staff.

A study found that in three out of nine searches for common hardware items on the Home Depot website, no correct matches were found, indicating a deficiency in the search mechanism. Furthermore, when checking inventory at local Home Depot stores, it was often paltry, with only a few sizes or types available.
