Honeywell Boosts F-35 Cooling Capacity with New Upgrade
Honeywell Aerospace is upgrading the cooling system of the F-35 fighter jet to meet growing demands. The new P40 upgrade will increase the aircraft's power and thermal management system (PTMS) cooling capacity by 25%, from approximately 32 to 40 kilowatts.
This upgrade is necessary as the onboard electronics produce heat while collecting information, running mission systems, and supporting pilots. As operators add more demanding sensors and computing capabilities, the load on the cooling system grows.
The P40 upgrade will provide approximately eight additional kilowatts of cooling capacity without requiring structural changes to the aircraft. It achieves this through software changes and targeted improvements to liquid-cooling equipment within the PTMS.
