Honeywell Expands Data Center Operations to Include Power and Utilities

Honeywell Technologies is expanding its data center operations beyond traditional building systems and security to include on-site power and utilities. The company, known for its fire protection, building management, and software integration services, is now exploring infrastructure outside the data hall, such as electricity generation and central utility systems. Adhishesh Sood, Senior Director of Business Development at Honeywell, noted that data centers are increasingly becoming power generation assets due to the need to supply their own electricity.

In Australia, the demand for higher-density facilities with advanced AI capabilities is driving the construction of new data centers. Rhys Crabb, Director of Offering Management at Honeywell ANZ, observed that while retrofitting existing facilities for AI is under discussion, most activity revolves around new developments. New sites allow for better planning of power, cooling, and building controls, whereas retrofitting presents constraints due to existing infrastructure.

Honeywell aims to integrate separate building and infrastructure systems through a central management platform. Crabb emphasized that integration should align with the operator's goals rather than merely collecting data. The company also extends its operational technology security to the systems that run the facility, ensuring compatibility with third-party equipment. Delivery in Australia and New Zealand involves both channel partners and Honeywell Building Solutions, with roles varying by product and contract.

Crabb highlighted Australia and New Zealand as early adopters of large, integrated building projects, with similar approaches emerging in Southeast Asia. Honeywell seeks long-term relationships with operators, from initial design through commissioning and maintenance, ensuring performance objectives are met. The company's experience spans commercial property, healthcare, and hospitality, with some customer relationships lasting decades.
