Honeywell Outlines Plan to Close Utility Sector Skills Gap

The utility sector faces a critical challenge as a significant portion of its experienced workforce nears retirement. By 2032, 50% of the utility workforce is expected to leave the industry, taking with them decades of institutional knowledge. This exodus is happening just as power demand is surging to record levels, creating a widening skills gap that threatens operational efficiency and safety.

To address this issue, Honeywell proposes a three-part solution: automation, remote monitoring, and connected tools. These technologies aim to bridge the gap between retiring veterans and younger workers who lack the same level of experience. Automation can handle repetitive tasks, freeing up experienced workers for more complex work, while also standardizing best practices across shifts.

Remote monitoring systems, like the Honeywell NXU Residential Smart Gas Meter, can detect and respond to issues automatically, reducing the need for on-site expertise. Connected tools, such as Honeywell Forge Performance+ for Utilities, combine institutional knowledge with digital skills, providing a unified platform that supports all skill levels.

By implementing these solutions, utilities can maintain operational resilience, improve efficiency, and ensure the reliability of critical infrastructure during this period of significant workforce change.
