Hotel Routers Hacked: Microsoft Warns of Public Wi-Fi Threat

Microsoft has warned of hackers targeting commercial routers used by hotels and other businesses in the hospitality industry. The hacking campaign, which was first detected in early May, is linked to a well-known Russian hacking group.

The attackers were able to compromise some hotel networks and redirect guests to convincing fake websites and pop-up messages. These messages appeared to come from trusted sources such as Google and Windows, and instructed users to complete security checks or install updates.

Microsoft advises travelers to avoid software updates and downloads while connected to public Wi-Fi, and to be cautious of unexpected pop-ups and update messages. If a suspicious message appears, do not click any buttons inside the message, do not enter personal information, and close the browser or force it to quit.
