Hotel WiFi Networks Compromised by Russian-Linked Hackers

Microsoft has issued a warning about a widespread hacking operation targeting hotel WiFi networks. The operation, called 'CaptiveCrunch', was observed by Microsoft starting in May and appears to have ties to Russia.

The hackers compromise Wi-Fi networks at hospitality-related organizations, including hotels, by tricking users into downloading malicious files via pop-ups that appear when connecting to the network.

Those affected can capture screenshots and keystrokes, and may even be able to remotely hijack devices if necessary. Fake login screens can also grant access to a user's personal email address.

To avoid this issue, Microsoft recommends using private networks like mobile hotspots while traveling. If this is not possible, users should be cautious of any pop-up windows that appear after logging into the hotel network.
