How to Update Your Microsoft Account Phone Number
Updating the phone number on your Microsoft account requires navigating different settings depending on its purpose. If the number is used as a sign-in alias, you can manage it under Your info in your Microsoft account or via the alias management page. For security verification numbers, adjustments are made through the Advanced security options under the Security tab. Teams profile details are linked to your Microsoft account, and changes must be made through that account rather than Teams itself.
To replace a sign-in phone number, sign in to your Microsoft account and navigate to Edit account info. Add the new number, verify it, and ensure another alias is set as primary before removing the old one. For security verification numbers, establish a new verification method first, as removing the old one without a backup triggers a 30-day restricted period.
If you lose access to your old phone number, use another registered verification method to regain access. For work or school accounts, contact your organization’s administrator, as the process differs from personal accounts. Teams profile updates are immediate once the number is changed in your Microsoft account.
Microsoft is phasing out SMS authentication for personal accounts, so alternative verification methods like email or authenticator apps are recommended. The 30-day waiting period for security changes does not close your account but restricts certain updates. Microsoft Rewards allows different verification numbers during redemption without altering your account number.
