Huawei Accelerates AI Chip Development Amid US Export Controls
Nvidia's shares edged up 2.54% after Huawei announced an accelerated launch schedule for its Ascend AI chips, a move that aims to narrow the performance gap with Nvidia in the global market.
China's Huawei is moving faster to develop its next-generation Ascend AI chips, with a new timeline that sees the Ascend 960DT debut nine months ahead of schedule in the first quarter of 2027. The companion Ascend 960PR chip will launch three months earlier in the third quarter of 2027.
Huawei's rotating chairman David Wang laid out plans for the next two Ascend generations, the 970 and 980, scheduled to launch in 2028 and 2029 respectively. The company expects computing power to double with each new generation.
