Huawei Challenges Nvidia with New AI Chip Technologies
Huawei has unveiled new chip technologies in a bid to challenge global leaders in artificial intelligence. The Chinese technology giant announced the Atlas 960 SuperPoD computing cluster, which boasts improved performance in AI training and inference.
The company also revealed plans to launch the Ascend 970 and 980 chip series in 2028 and 2029, with significant improvements in computing power expected. Huawei's announcement comes just days before a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington on September 24.
George Chen, a partner and chair of digital practice at The Asia Group consultancy, believes the timing of Huawei's announcement underscores Beijing's confidence and ambition in technology and innovation. Chen notes that AI developments move quickly, making it difficult for anyone to hold the lead forever.
