Huawei Challenges Nvidia with New AI-Focused Chip Technologies
Chinese technology giant Huawei unveiled new chip technologies in Shanghai, marking a significant step up in the company's artificial intelligence (AI) ambitions. This move comes amidst escalating tensions between China and the US over AI development, with President Donald Trump insisting that the US must maintain its lead.
Huawei introduced the Atlas 960 SuperPoD computing cluster, which boasts improved AI training and inference capabilities compared to its predecessor launched just months ago. The company also announced plans to launch the Ascend 970 and 980 chip series in 2028 and 2029, respectively, with significant improvements in computing power expected.
The timing of Huawei's announcement is seen as a demonstration of Beijing's confidence and ambition in technology and innovation, particularly ahead of President Xi Jinping's visit to Washington on September 24. George Chen, a partner at The Asia Group consultancy, noted that the US must be cautious not to underestimate China's progress in AI development.
Despite relying heavily on US chips, including those from Nvidia, Chinese AI companies are increasingly embracing domestic chip solutions. Huawei has made significant strides in developing its own advanced chips and maintains a lead over other Chinese chip developers.
