Huawei Challenges Nvidia with New Chip Technologies in AI
Chinese technology giant Huawei has announced new chip technologies that challenge global leaders such as Nvidia in the field of artificial intelligence. The announcement was made at Huawei's annual key conference in Shanghai, just days before a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington on September 24.
The Atlas 960 SuperPoD computing cluster, introduced by Huawei, is a faster successor to its previous model with improvements in AI training and inference. The company also plans to launch the Ascend 970 and 980 chip series in 2028 and 2029, respectively, which are expected to have significant improvements in computing power.
Analysts say that China's rapid pursuit of technological self-reliance, including in chips, has narrowed the gap between China and the US in AI. Despite restrictions on accessing advanced AI chips and cutting-edge chipmaking machines, Huawei has made its own advanced chips and maintains a lead over Chinese chip developers.
According to George Chen, a partner and chair of digital practice at The Asia Group consultancy, 'The timing, less than two weeks before President Xi Jinping's visit to Washington, underscores Beijing's confidence and ambition in technology and innovation.'
