Huawei Speeds Up AI Chip Plans to Challenge Nvidia in China
Huawei has accelerated its plans to develop AI chips in an effort to compete with Nvidia in China. The company announced that its next-generation Ascend 960DT chip will launch in Q1 2027, nine months ahead of schedule.
The chip is designed for training and running large language models like ChatGPT and has a compute performance of 2 petaflops, with 288 GB of memory and 9.6 TB per second of bandwidth.
Huawei's UnifiedBus technology allows processors, memory, and networking to be linked together, enabling up to a million chips to work together like a single giant computer.
The company is also open-sourcing its CANN software layer, which is compatible with widely used tools like PyTorch, in an effort to tackle Nvidia's CUDA software layer.
