Huawei Unleashes Homegrown Chip Technologies Amid Sino-US AI Rivalry
Huawei has taken a significant step in its pursuit of technological self-reliance by unveiling new chip technologies that challenge global leaders like Nvidia.
The Chinese technology giant announced its latest advancements at its annual key conference in Shanghai, just days before the expected meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 24.
Huawei introduced the Atlas 960 SuperPoD computing cluster, a faster successor to its previous model with improved AI training and inference capabilities. The company also plans to launch the Ascend 970 and 980 chip series in 2028 and 2029, respectively.
Analysts say that China's rapid pursuit of technological self-reliance, including in chips, is driven by US-led restrictions that have barred it from accessing some of the world's most advanced AI chips and cutting-edge chipmaking machines.
