Huawei Unveils Chip Technologies in Bid to Close AI Gap
Chinese technology giant Huawei has unveiled new chip technologies in a bid to catch up with global leaders like Nvidia in artificial intelligence. The announcement comes just days before an expected meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington on September 24.
Huawei's introduction of the Atlas 960 SuperPoD computing cluster marks a significant improvement over its previous model, launched only months ago, with increased capabilities in AI training and inference. The company also plans to launch the Ascend 970 and 980 chip series in 2028 and 2029, respectively.
According to George Chen, a partner and chair of digital practice at The Asia Group consultancy, Huawei's announcement underscores Beijing's confidence and ambition in technology and innovation. 'AI developments move so quickly that no one can be certain of holding the lead forever,' Chen said.
