Huawei Unveils Plans for Domestic AI Chip Expansion Amid US Restrictions
Huawei is accelerating its efforts to build domestic AI computing hardware by launching two new advanced AI chips in 2027. The company plans to release the 960DT in Q1 and Ascend 960PR in Q3, expanding its lineup of AI chips. Huawei's UnifiedBus technology enables efficient communication between large numbers of AI processors, allowing them to operate as a single computing system.
China's push for AI computing self-reliance is gaining momentum, with Chinese chipmakers stepping up development amidst U.S. restrictions on advanced semiconductor exports. Washington has imposed controls on shipments of advanced AI chips and chipmaking equipment, prompting Chinese companies to develop local alternatives.
Nvidia remains the established leader in AI computing hardware, but its access to the Chinese market is uncertain due to U.S. restrictions. Huawei's new products could give domestic companies additional alternatives to Nvidia in a market where access to Nvidia's most advanced chips remains restricted.
