Humans Reviewing AI-Generated Images for Microsoft's Copilot
Microsoft's Copilot AI tool is being used to generate images for users, but behind the scenes, humans are reviewing and evaluating the output. Internal documents obtained by 404 Media show that contractors were hired to review prompts and user image uploads, evaluating how well the system followed the prompt.
The tasks included reviewing sexually suggestive images of young girls, breast enhancements, pro-anorexia content, and images of popular cartoon characters like She-Hulk. Contractors say it's hard to take their job seriously when they have to focus on details like bust size or sexual positions.
According to 404 Media, a workforce of at least hundreds of human reviewers is evaluating the prompts and output. The contractors' job isn't to moderate the images, but to decide which version better depicts the desired outcome.
This isn't an isolated incident. Companies like OpenAI have used human contractors in Venezuela and Kenya to evaluate output, correct it, and refine prompts for a couple of bucks per task. As the AI boom continues, concerns are growing about the humanitarian and environmental crises these systems are creating.
