Hutto approves Residence Inn with height and parking variances
The Hutto City Council approved a Residence Inn by Marriott project in the Hanson’s Corner expansion, allowing for taller walls and fewer parking spaces than required by local codes. The four-story hotel, set to open on a 3-acre tract behind Home Depot, will stand at 55 feet, 10 feet taller than permitted. The developer, SITX Capital, argued that modern trends in transportation reduce the need for excessive parking spaces.
Council members debated the parking variance, with some expressing concerns about potential demand for the hotel’s conference room. Developer Navid Karedia countered that the conference space is small and intended only for hotel guests, negating the need for additional parking. Mayor Mike Snyder supported the variance, stating that parking shortages are a business issue rather than a government concern.
In other city business, Hutto continued its opposition to disannexation efforts under Senate Bill 2038, denying a petition from property owners at 150 Mustang Drive. The city has consistently fought such petitions, joining a legal action against the bill filed by Grand Prairie. Additionally, council members discussed the development of a new fire station near Samsung Austin Semiconductor, emphasizing the need for specialized training to serve high-tech industries.
