A shocking incident unfolded at the Hutto Home Depot on August 14 when a 78-year-old customer, Manuel Vera, was brutally attacked with a hatchet by a suspect who later claimed to have hoped for his victim's death.

The assault occurred around 5 p.m. inside the store in the 600 block of West Street, leaving Vera with injuries to both arms and his head.

A man named John Doyle Bauer, 41, of Austin, was arrested about an hour later for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to police.

Bauer's bond has been set at $750,000, and he remains in the Williamson County Jail in Georgetown.

Vera has since been released from Ascension Seton Williamson Hospital and is recovering at home.
