Hyperscalers' AI Revenue Metrics Raise More Questions Than Answers
Hyperscalers like Microsoft and Amazon are increasingly disclosing AI revenue metrics to investors, but what they're measuring remains unclear.
The two tech giants have reported that their AI businesses exceeded $37 billion and $25 billion annual revenue run rates, respectively. However, the definition of AI revenue is not standardized across companies, making it difficult to compare and understand these metrics.
Microsoft's disclosure about its AI business provides a unique opportunity to break down the company's AI revenue numbers. According to Bloomberg, Microsoft's $24.1 billion in fiscal 2026 revenue from commercial arrangements with OpenAI accounts for approximately 50-70% of the company's AI business.
The remaining 30-50% of Microsoft's AI business is more difficult to interpret due to the company's variety of pricing models, including usage-based services and bundled subscription plans. This raises important accounting questions about how much of a contract should be allocated to 'AI revenue'.
