Hyperscalers Face Massive Hurdle as Goldman Estimates $300 Billion Annual AI Revenue Target
Goldman Sachs has delivered a reality check to investors who have piled back into AI-linked stocks, estimating that major hyperscalers like Amazon, Microsoft, and Oracle need to generate around $300 billion in annual AI revenue to break even on their investments.
This calculation is based on Goldman's estimate of the enormous spending behind the boom, with U.S. hyperscalers projected to spend roughly $800 billion on capital expenditures in 2026. The bank also estimates that total global AI investment will surpass $1 trillion this year, including about $581 billion in the United States.
Despite cloud growth suggesting monetization is already happening, Goldman's analysis suggests it's not yet at the scale needed to justify the investment. Hyperscaler cloud revenue in the second quarter was running at an annualized rate roughly $70 billion above the trend that existed before the generative AI boom.
