Illinois Governor JB Pritzker announced on Thursday that Hyundai Translead is significantly expanding its operations in Will County, bringing over 3,700 new jobs to the Joliet area. The company, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company, will invest $600 million in the region, repurposing two former industrial sites, including a former Caterpillar facility, to boost production of commercial transportation equipment.
Hyundai Translead initially announced in March that it would establish operations in Illinois, creating 2,475 jobs. The latest expansion doubles that commitment, with CEO Sean Kenney emphasizing the strategic advantage of being closer to customers and suppliers. The investment also includes a new manufacturing training academy at Joliet Junior College to prepare workers for advanced manufacturing roles.
Local leaders, including Joliet Mayor Terry D'Arcy, highlighted the economic benefits of the expansion. D'Arcy noted that the new jobs will generate significant income for the community, supporting local businesses and fostering economic growth. He also pointed out the historical significance of the site, which was once part of his great-great-grandfather's farm.
The expansion solidifies Joliet's role as a hub for advanced manufacturing, with the potential for additional spin-off businesses and further economic development in Will County. Hyundai Translead manufactures a range of transportation equipment, including trailers, truck bodies, and dollies.
