IBM Admits Execution Shortfalls Amid Shift to AI-Focused Sales

IBM's CEO Arvind Krishna admitted to 'execution' shortfalls in the company's software sales during its Q2 earnings call. He attributed this shortfall to a sudden shift in customer spending from IBM's traditional software offerings to AI-focused hardware components.

Krishna explained that a number of large deals worth double-digit numbers had slipped, and while some have since closed, about one-third of those shifted deals had already closed within the first three weeks. This indicates to Krishna that this was a deferral rather than destruction of business.

IBM's CFO James Kavanaugh further clarified that the company witnessed a shift in client spending priorities towards servers, storage, and memory purchases due to supply chain constraints and expected price increases.

Krishna emphasized IBM's confidence in its business and ability to grow despite this short-term shortfall. He highlighted plans to increase AI usage for software development, sales and marketing efforts, and supply chain optimization.

IBM's recent software-focused acquisitions, including Red Hat, HashiCorp, and Confluent, are expected to drive high-margin subscription-based recurring software revenues. Krishna pointed out that these operations power a majority of IBM's revenue, with Red Hat's OpenShift platform hitting $2.2 billion in annual revenue run rate.
