IBM Adopts Everspin MRAM for Enhanced Data Protection in FlashCore Modules
IBM has integrated Everspin's magneto-resistive RAM (MRAM) into its fifth-generation FlashCore Modules (FCM5), replacing traditional super-capacitors for data protection during power failures. The FCM5 drives are computational SSDs featuring hardware compression, deduplication, die striping, and cyber-attack detection. These drives use QLC NAND with an SLC write zone and offer raw capacities ranging from 6.6 TB to 105.6 TB, with compressed capacities reaching up to 316.8 TB.
MRAM, supplied by Everspin, stores data in magnetic tunnel junctions, making it non-volatile with DRAM-class access speeds and high endurance. Steffen Hellmold, a fellow at Everspin, highlighted that MRAM is ideal as a write buffer or cache for small data storage applications. The technology allows IBM to eliminate super-capacitors, freeing up space for additional NAND chips and increasing overall drive capacity.
IBM has been using Everspin MRAM in its FlashCore Modules for several years, initially employing up to 128 MB of Toggle MRAM in FCM3 drives. In April 2024, IBM chose Everspin's PERSYST EMD4E001G 1 Gb STT-MRAM chip for its FCM4 drives to protect data during power loss. Everspin, with over 2,000 customers and 200 million chips shipped, also supplies MRAM to Dell and LSI/Avago for use in RAID controllers.
