IBM and Indian Institutions Deepen AI and Quantum Computing Research Collaborations
IBM has expanded its research collaborations with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to advance innovations in agentic AI, sovereign AI, quantum computing, and next-generation computing systems. The partnership with IIT Bombay, which began in 2018, will focus on sovereign and Indic language model adaptation, multimodal AI systems, and AI infrastructure and knowledge retrieval. Meanwhile, the collaboration with IISc, initiated in 2021, will explore agentic systems, AI for scientific and industry applications, and quantum computing algorithm development.
Key areas of the IBM-IIT Bombay collaboration include advancing sovereign AI and Indic language models to improve multilingual AI capabilities for Indian languages. The partnership will also develop multimodal AI systems to enhance software programming education, human-AI collaboration, and intelligent operations across hybrid cloud environments. Additionally, the effort aims to enhance intelligent knowledge retrieval by optimizing AI runtimes and distributed inference to improve the performance and scalability of large language models.
The IBM-IISc research collaboration focuses on agentic systems to improve orchestration across hybrid cloud environments, AI for scientific and industry applications, and quantum computing. The research will create lightweight time-series foundation models based on the IBM Granite model family for energy analytics, supporting forecasting, anomaly detection, and energy optimization. The collaboration will also explore orchestration for quantum and high-performance computing to accelerate scientific discovery through efficient quantum-centric supercomputing workflows.
Dr. Amith Singhee, Director of IBM Research India, emphasized the importance of these collaborations in shaping the next wave of computing. Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan of IIT Bombay highlighted the joint efforts in advancing multimodal AI models and knowledge retrieval. Prof. Yogesh Simmhan of IISc noted the convergence of hybrid cloud, AI agents, and quantum technologies in shaping the future of computing.
