IBM Bob and Factory Lead on Deployment Control in Shift Away from Model Quality
IBM has announced that its agentic software development platform, IBM Bob, can now be self-hosted in various environments. This move follows similar announcements from another vendor, Factory, which emphasized deployment control and on-premises capabilities. The convergence of these two vendors' strategies suggests a shift in the market towards prioritizing deployment control over model quality.
According to Futurum Research, hybrid and edge deployments are projected to capture 44% of the AI infrastructure market by 2030, while public cloud adoption is expected to decline to 46%. IBM's own research institute found that 68% of surveyed executives consider meeting data residency and sovereignty requirements challenging.
The structural read on this development suggests that vendors are competing at the procurement layer, where security reviews, compliance checklists, and sovereignty mandates set the terms. This shift has significant implications for the market, including a move towards prioritizing deployment control and governance over model quality.
