IBM Bounces Back from Q2 Software Shortfall
IBM's CEO Arvind Krishna acknowledged that the company experienced a 'shortfall' in its second-quarter software sales, specifically in areas sensitive to capital expenditure. This shift in customer spending towards hardware components and cybersecurity-focused software outside of IBM's core competencies led to the underperformance.
Krishna attributed the issue to 'execution,' stating that the company fell short in meeting expected timelines for large deals, which accounted for the majority of the shortfall. CFO James Kavanaugh further explained that IBM witnessed a shift in client spending priorities towards servers, storage, and memory purchases due to supply chain constraints and anticipated price increases.
Krishna noted that about one-third of the shifted deals had since closed, with the expectation that most would close over the next six months. He emphasized IBM's confidence in its business and ability to grow shareholder value despite the dynamic technology spending environment.
