IBM CEO Admits Execution Shortfall Amid Software Sales Slump

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna acknowledged that his company faced a shortfall in its second-quarter software sales, but claimed that this was due to execution issues rather than a fundamental shift in market demand. The shortfall was largely attributed to a shift in client spending priorities towards supply chain-constrained hardware and cybersecurity-focused software.

During the end of June, IBM witnessed a significant change in client behavior, with many opting for servers, storage, and memory purchases ahead of expected price increases. This led to the company failing to close a double-digit number of large deals on their expected timelines, accounting for the majority of the shortfall.

Krisha noted that about one-third of these shifted deals have since closed, with an expectation that two-thirds to three-fourths will be completed over the next six months. This suggests that the delay may be temporary rather than a sign of a deeper issue.

IBM is pinning its hopes on AI and software to drive future growth, with plans to increase the use of AI in scaling software development, bolstering sales and marketing efforts, and optimizing supply chains. The company's recent acquisitions, including Red Hat, HashiCorp, and Confluent, are also expected to play a key role in this strategy.
