IBM CEO Points to Execution as Key Factor in Q2 Software Shortfall

IBM's CEO Arvind Krishna attributed the company's second-quarter software shortfall to execution issues, not fundamental problems in its business. In a recent earnings call, Krishna stated that the shortfall was limited to a capital expenditure-sensitive area of IBM's portfolio.

The issue arose from a sudden shift in customer spending towards supply chain-constrained hardware and cybersecurity-focused software, which moves away from some of IBM's core competencies. CFO James Kavanaugh explained that this shift was due to clients prioritizing other capital investments ahead of expected price increases.

As a result, IBM failed to close a low double-digit number of large deals on the expected timelines, accounting for most of the shortfall. However, Krishna claimed that about one-third of these shifted deals had since closed in the first three weeks after engagement with clients.

Krishna expressed confidence in IBM's business and its ability to grow and drive shareholder value, citing plans to increase AI adoption to help scale software development, bolster sales and marketing efforts, and optimize supply chains. The company is also accelerating changes to its go-to-market model to expand coverage across thousands of additional clients.
