IBM Chip Breakthrough: Simultaneous Z and Arm Processing
IBM has unveiled a new chip that can run both its own Z architecture and Arm's instruction set simultaneously, marking a significant shift in mainframe architecture. The dual-architecture processor will power future generations of IBM Z and LinuxONE systems.
The new chip is capable of switching between Z and Arm software modes in nanoseconds, allowing businesses to run a wide range of Arm-native Linux software, including AI frameworks. This move answers the question about the mainframe's role in an AI-driven world dominated by other people's silicon.
According to Tina Tarquinio, IBM Z and LinuxONE Chief Product Officer, 'We're really excited about being what I would consider one of the most powerful commercially available processors that'll be dual architecture.'
The chip uses an open-source KVM hypervisor, allowing businesses to run Arm64 Linux virtual machines and Linux on Z virtual machines simultaneously. The chip runs its 11 high-performance cores at a base frequency above 5.7GHz, which is extremely fast by industry standards.
