At this year's Hot Chips conference, IBM unveiled a game-changing processor that combines traditional enterprise workloads and AI processing on the same chip. This innovation marks a significant shift in the field of computing, where companies are increasingly designing their own chips to power agentic workflows.

The new dual-architecture processor allows organizations to run AI inference close to where their data already resides, eliminating the need for separate infrastructure. This is particularly important for mainframe users, who can now deploy more AI applications that live closer to their mission-critical transactions and data.

Gabe Goodhart, IBM's Chief Architect of AI Foundations, emphasized the convenience of this approach: 'Rather than bringing the mainframe code out and sacrificing that reliability you've come to depend on, why don't we bring the modern AI code in?'
