IBM Debuts Dual-Architecture Mainframe Processor With Native Arm Support
IBM has announced the development of its first dual-architecture mainframe processor, which will support both IBM and Arm compute platforms. This marks a significant milestone in IBM's collaboration with Arm, established in April 2026.
The new processor is designed to allow organizations to run Arm-native Linux environments simultaneously with z/OS and Linux on IBM Z, while retaining IBM's established security, reliability, and scale. This integration will bring the Arm software ecosystem, which supports over 22 million developers worldwide, to IBM's platforms.
According to Christian Jacobi, chief technology officer and IBM Fellow for IBM Systems Development, the processor addresses a growing need for infrastructure flexibility. 'As organizations modernize their application portfolios and integrate AI into core business operations, they need infrastructure that expands their options,' he said.
