IBM Expands into Tier-2 Cities, Emphasizing Talent Access and Work-Life Balance
IBM has defied industry trends by expanding into tier-2 cities in India, where other technology companies are considering closing non-metro offices. Sandip Patel, Managing Director of IBM India & South Asia, attributes this decision to diversifying location concentration, accessing talent from regional colleges, and building more vibrant IT ecosystems.
The expansion also offers employees a better work-life balance, with shorter commutes and access to amenities in emerging technology locations. In contrast, cities like Bengaluru and Mumbai are plagued by long commutes, which can be detrimental to employee well-being.
Patel emphasizes that AI will create new jobs, but it's essential to adapt skills to work with these technologies. He notes a huge backlog of software enhancements for clients, which can be accelerated using IBM's Bob capabilities.
