IBM Lands $1 Billion Award for Quantum Foundry as IonQ and Nvidia Cut Optimization Time
IBM has finalized a $1 billion award from the U.S. Department of Commerce to support quantum wafer manufacturing R&D at its 300-millimeter foundry in Albany, New York. Anderon, an IBM company, will use this funding in conjunction with another $1 billion investment from IBM to advance the development of superconducting qubit arrays, quantum input/output signaling, and readout components.
The award is significant as manufacturing remains one of the biggest constraints on expanding quantum hardware. The success of Anderon's venture will be crucial in determining whether it can move from early wafer runs into reliable production for both IBM and outside customers.
Meanwhile, IonQ has collaborated with Nvidia to develop a generative AI method that creates quantum optimization circuits directly instead of relying on repeated parameter tuning. This new approach has the potential to reduce one bottleneck in hybrid quantum optimization but requires further validation on real IonQ systems.
