IBM Lands $1B Quantum Manufacturing Award as IonQ Advances AI-Assisted Optimization
IBM has secured a major boost to its quantum computing efforts with a $1 billion U.S. award under the CHIPS and Science Act. The funding will support research and development at a 300-millimeter quantum wafer facility in Albany, New York, where IBM is also committing another $1 billion.
Separately, IonQ has made significant progress in using generative AI to optimize quantum circuits. Working with NVIDIA, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the University of Tennessee, the company developed a method that maintains a roughly 28-second generation time across various problem sizes.
The developments indicate separate areas of growth for the industry, with IBM expanding its manufacturing capacity while IonQ focuses on reducing computational demands in quantum optimization.
