IBM Links Modular Cryogenic Cells to Scale Quantum Architecture
IBM has made significant progress in its quest to build a fault-tolerant quantum computer. The company announced that it has successfully linked and cooled two modular cryogenic cells, reaching an operating temperature below 15 millikelvin (-273.135°C) at its Poughkeepsie, New York facility.
This achievement marks a crucial hardware milestone for IBM's planned Starling Quantum Computer, which is scheduled to be delivered in 2029. The modular cryogenic cells are designed to house and cool at least 2,000 physical qubits each, providing up to 12 times more wiring space than traditional cylindrical 'chandelier' cryostats.
IBM's proprietary L-coupler technology enables direct quantum state transfer and entangling gates between separate physical chips. The company plans to install IBM Quantum Nighthawk processors into the modular cells later this year, beginning system-level operational testing. By 2027, IBM aims to link multiple processors with at least 1,000 programmable qubits using L-couplers.
