IBM Quantum Processor Achieves Quantum Advantage in Record-Breaking 19 Seconds

A team of researchers led by Tigran Sedrakyan at BlueQubit has achieved quantum advantage using IBM's 120-qubit superconducting quantum processor, 'Nighthawk r2.'

The experiment, known as Random Circuit Sampling (RCS), was conducted in IBM's standard cloud execution environment and took just 19 seconds to generate 1 million samples.

For comparison, the world's fastest supercomputer, Frontier, would take around 110 years to complete the same task.

This breakthrough is significant because it demonstrates quantum advantage on a commercially accessible processor that can be readily reproduced by non-expert users via the cloud.
