IBM Receives $1B Govt Backing for Quantum Chip Manufacturing
IBM has received $1 billion from the US Commerce Department for its Anderon subsidiary, which is working on quantum-chip manufacturing. This award adds federal backing to IBM's domestic manufacturing efforts and takes the total disclosed funding package to $2 billion.
The company is also investing an additional $1 billion of its own capital into Anderon's 300-millimeter Albany foundry. This move targets superconducting qubits, signaling hardware, and readout equipment needed for quantum computing.
IBM's shares dropped 0.5% to $228.46 after the announcement, with its valuation still below its estimated value of $242.80. The government-supported expansion has reduced IBM's capital burden, but commercial success is yet to be seen.
